Welcome note

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Following the first two successful conferences in this series, it is again our pleasure to invite you to attend the upcoming Intermetallics 2017 Conference, scheduled from 02 – 06 October 2017 at the Educational Center Kloster Banz, Germany.

Materials based on intermetallic phases – Intermetallics for short – constitute a new class of materials, which encompasses alloys for structural as well as for functional applications. With a beneficial combination of high strength, low density and good corrosion resistance, they are specifically suited for applications at high temperatures and in severe environments. As some intermetallic phases show unique physical properties, they are also of interest for various functional applications. In addition, their possible appearance and thermodynamic stability in High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) potentially used as strengthening second phases in Compositionally Complex Alloys (CCAs) are recent scientific issues which will be addressed.

The choice of local organisers and members of the international advisory board guarantees not only representation of all relevant topics but also a good balance between research and application. Topics of general importance will be dealt with in single sessions in the morning, while current materials, such as γ-TiAl, iron aluminides, silicides, or certain aspects of intermetallics will be the subject of two more specific parallel sessions in the afternoon. A high-profile poster session will be rounding off the conference. Following the last successful educational seminar, a “School on Mechanical Behaviour of Intermetallic Phases” specifically devoted to young researchers will precede the conference.

The conference will again take place at Kloster Banz near Bamberg. The cloister is situated in a remote place above the valley of the river Main. As a well-known educational centre, it is an ideal place for conferences with its good infrastructure and relaxing atmosphere. In addition, being situated in the central part of Germany, it is easily accessible from Nuremberg, Munich and Frankfurt airports.

We are looking forward to welcoming you in Banz,

Your Intermetallics 2017 Congress Team
